Product Description

156, [11] pages. Illustrated with numerous diagrams for distilling equipment, and with publisher's advertisements. Gilt-lettered bevelled brick cloth. New York; London: Dick & Fitzgerald; Trübner & Company, 1889.

According to Rabelais Books, Leonard Monzert studied under chemist and botanist V.J. Moner and operated as a wine merchant on New York's Bowery. He blamed his failure as a wine merchant on " the inability of the South to meet its liabilties." His first book, The Independent Liquorist, published by John Trow in 1966 (re-published by Dick & Fitzgerald circa 1886) is one of the most useful sources of recipes for 19th century American bitters, cordials, tinctures, and essences. This book is scarce - OCLC finds only 9 copies in libraries - and covers the gamut of distilling rye, brandy, whiskey, gin, rum, and arrack. Fine condition.
